Social and Emotional Learning Lead Initiative
The district's Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Lead Initiative offers opportunities for teachers and administrators to participate in a SEL collaborative with the District SEL Team. The vision of the initiative, as articulated by the District SEL Team, is to support school communities by building upon their existing knowledge, skills, and dispositions to cultivate rich learning opportunities for the development of learners’ social and emotional well-being.
The District SEL Team is made up of SEL Helping Teachers who are responsible for implementing and building awareness of evidence-based curriculum that incorporates explicit, sequenced, and active forms of skill development. The District SEL Team is responsive to emerging needs through their re-evaluation and refinement of the SEL-based curriculum implementation process.
The District SEL Team believes in a schoolwide, systems approach to integrating academic, social, and emotional learning across classrooms. Within the schools, School-based SEL Teams are comprised of school- and district-based professionals who co-plan and co-facilitate the implementation of SEL-based curriculum to enhance learners’ skill development. As part of this approach, participating schools designate one of their school-based teachers to be a SEL Lead. The SEL Leads work with teachers, staff and administration to support the development and implementation of quality SEL practices in classrooms. Support and mentorship for SEL Leads is provided by the SEL Helping Teachers.
As part of Surrey School District’s ongoing commitment to evidence-informed practice, the District SEL Team and Research and Evaluation Department collaboratively develop survey materials used to evaluate the SEL Lead Initiative and collect evidence of the initiative’s impact.
Our researchers and the District SEL Team collect baseline and end-of-year data measuring student and teacher SEL competencies and experiences. Through collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, the Research and Evaluation Department supports the district by evaluating and reporting on the SEL Lead Initiative. Findings from the evaluation are used to assist the district in the planning and formation of supports to benefit our students.
