Ethics & Professional Practice (EA 2045)


Length of Course: 30 hours

 

Course Description:

Students will examine what it means to act professionally in the role of an Education Assistant. They will explore ethics, confidentiality, working as a member of a team, appropriate workplace conduct, and professional communication. They will also learn of the importance of being physically and mentally prepared to be an EA. Students will review the roles and responsibilities of an Education Assistant, and how those responsibilities fit into student support.

 

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of a balanced life, of healthy living, and a positive mindset
  • Recognize how their own communication style and worldview can have an impact on professional working relationships
  • Understand the correlation of professional ethics and maintaining the public trust of the public education system
  • Understand what is meant by reasonable expectations of workplace behaviour
  • Identify appropriate workplace behaviour
  • Understand and maintain personal boundaries with students and colleagues
  • Demonstrate how to treat students with respect and dignity
  • Communicate ethically and professionally with others
  • Demonstrate empathetic and critical listening skills
  • Give and receive feedback appropriately and constructively
  • Resolve conflict in a constructive manner in a variety of contexts
  • Demonstrate competent verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Demonstrate how to maintain confidentiality of students and colleagues
  • Recognize the main components of an EA on-call/sub books
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of an Education Assistant
  • Recognize how to be prepared for work
  • Demonstrate understanding of appropriate workplace attire
